If You Have a Roof Leak, Don’t Panic! Here’s What You Should Do Instead.
Is your roof leaking now? Contact Bayview Exteriors at 757.431.1300 for fast service.
A leaky roof can feel like an overwhelming problem, but if you take the right actions immediately, you can usually prevent significant damage. While the cause and severity of each roof leak is different, one thing that is common to all is that they won’t fix themselves. That’s why it’s important to know exactly what do you if you discover a leak in your roof.
Be Proactive
The worst thing you can do after finding a leak in your roof is wait. The leak will likely expand as time progresses and compromise the integrity of the roof as well as your home. Call a roofer as soon as you notice a leak.
Ask the Pros for Assistance
The most important thing you can do after finding a leak in your roof is ask the roofing experts for help as soon as possible. Do not delay as each hour you wait makes the roof leak that much worse, ultimately putting everything below at risk. Until the roofers can make the repair, put a large bucket below the leak to collect the water and minimize interior damage. If it’s raining heavily, be sure to check the bucket’s water level regularly to ensure it is not completely full or overflowing.
The leaky roof will create quite the annoying dripping noise as the water falls down below into the bucket. Position a wooden board across the container you are using to collect the water to mitigate the noise. This way, the water from above will drop down to the sides of the wood and into the bucket without creating a sound.
Is the Leak Spreading? Relieve the Pressure.
Take a close look at the leak along the ceiling to determine if it is spreading. If the leak is expanding yet has not broken through the ceiling, consider poking a tiny hole in the ceiling that permits the water to drain below. This prevents the water from building up to the point that it is heavy enough to cause a ceiling collapse.
Furthermore, there is the potential for the buildup of water to leak down into the walls, wiring and lights. You can create a hole to drain out the water with a simple screwdriver. Just make sure there is a bucket below to catch the water as it drips downward.
Mind Those Electronics and Valuables
Surveil the area near the leak for electronics and other devices plugged into wall outlets. Move these items out of the way so there is no chance the leak from the roof drips water directly into them. Also, move anything else of value from the area around the leak.
Let the Roofers Get to Work
Now that the leak is dripping downward rather than pooling up, it is time to wait for the roofing pros to arrive. Be patient and continue to switch out the buckets that fill with water for new ones until the roofers complete the job.
